2. What Medicare Is

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people age 65 and older. It also covers some younger people with qualifying disabilities or certain medical conditions.

There are specific times when people can enroll in Medicare or make changes to certain types of Medicare coverage.

3. Medicare Is Not Medicaid — and There Are Different Parts

Medicare and Medicaid are different programs, and it’s completely understandable if the difference feels confusing at first.

Medicare is a federal health insurance program.

Medicaid is a joint federal and state program, so eligibility and benefits can vary depending on where you live.

Some people have both Medicare and Medicaid.

Medicare itself also has different parts:

• Part A — Hospital coverage
• Part B — Medical coverage
• Part C — Medicare Advantage
• Part D — Prescription drug coverage

You may also hear about Medigap, which is supplemental insurance designed to work with Original Medicare.
